What to do if your circuit breaker trips

With the cold wet weather the chances of tripping circuit protection becomes higher.

Resetting a circuit breaker when you lose power and have never looked into a switchboard can be a daunting task, always remember if you feel uncomfortable or there are any parts of your switchboard that do not have protective covers call the team at solutions electrical.

Step-by-Step Guide to Resetting a Circuit Breaker (MCB) or Residual current circuit breaker (RCD)

  1. Identify the Tripped Breaker:

    • Go to your electrical switchboard, usually located in a hallway, garage, utility room, or outside of the house in a meter board.

    • Open the panel door and look for a breaker that is in the "off" position

  2. Turn Off All Appliances and Lights:

    • Before resetting the breaker, turn off or unplug any devices, appliances, or lights connected to the circuit. This reduces the load and prevents the breaker from tripping again immediately.

  3. Locate the Tripped Breaker:

    • Look for a breaker that is either in the "OFF" position. Some breakers may have a red or orange indicator to show they have tripped.

  4. Reset the Breaker:

    • Firmly push the breaker to the "ON" position. You should hear a click when it is fully engaged.

  5. Check the Circuit:

    • After resetting, check if the power has been restored to the affected area or appliances.

    • Turn on the lights or plug in the appliances one at a time to ensure they are working correctly.

  6. Monitor for Further Tripping:

    1. If the breaker trips again immediately or soon after, do not attempt to reset it again. This indicates a more serious issue, such as a short circuit, faulty appliance, fault to earth or wiring problem.

Safety Tips:

  • Do Not Force the Breaker: If a breaker does not easily reset or stays in the "OFF" position, do not force it. This could indicate a fault in the system.

  • Always use caution when working near an electrical panel. If outside in a meter board don't complete in the rain

  • Consult a Professional: If the breaker keeps tripping or if you're unsure about the cause, call solutions electrical to inspect and resolve the issue.

Resetting a circuit breaker is usually straightforward, but it’s important to prioritise safety and understand the reason behind the tripping to prevent future issues.
